20 CUM Biogas plant (Under GOBARdhan), Jharkhand
Under the GOBARdhan Scheme, the Jharkhand Government started a community biogas project in Chaibasa, a town in Jharkhand where tribal communities like the Ho, Munda, and Kharia live. Earlier, these communities used firewood and biomass for cooking. This caused cutting of trees, environmental pollution, and serious health problems because of smoke inside homes.
Also, cow dung that was not managed properly released harmful methane gas into the air. To solve these problems, the Gram Panchayat helped fund and set up a 20 CUM community biogas plant. This allowed villagers to get clean cooking fuel easily and also helped improve cleanliness and support a sustainable lifestyle.
Transforming Waste into Wealth: Real Impact of the 20 CUM Biogas Plant
Watch how the Jharkhand Govt. 20 CUM Biogas Plant under GOBARdhan turns organic waste into clean energy. See its real-world impact on sustainability, rural livelihoods, and eco-friendly waste management.
Objectives
Promote access to clean energy and sustainable rural development through solutions based on community initiatives.
01.
To provide clean and safe cooking fuel to rural households.
02.
To reduce the use of firewood and traditional biomass fuels.
03.
To manage cow waste properly and reduce methane gas emissions.
04.
To support community-driven and sustainable rural infrastructure development.
Challenges
The project faced several problems like dependence on traditional fuels, health and pollution issues, deforestation, and improper waste management.
Dependence on Traditional Fuels
Mostly people depend on wood and biomass for their daily cooking needs.
Health & Air Pollution Issues
Traditional cooking methods pollute the environment and arise serious health issues.
Deforestation Concerns
Continuous use of firewood caused cutting of trees and loss of forest resources.
Impact
To improve the quality of life by using clean energy, better health, and proper waste management.
Access to Clean Cooking Fuel
Biogas replaced the traditional way and provides a sustainable way for cooking.
Health Improvement
Reductions in indoor air pollution improved respiratory health.
Environmental Conservation
Reduced dependency on firewood, which saves the forest.
Community Sustainability Model
A self-managed biogas system maintains sustainability and circular resource use.
